| Kashmir Crafts: Kashmir has no common language, but the principalanguage spoken is Kashmiri. About fourth-fifth of the people of Kashmir are dependent on the exploitation of animal, vegetable and agricultural resources of their livelihood. Rice is cultivated in tiny fields carefully leveled and irrigated at the bottom of the valleys, and other crops in minute fields on the hillsides above eight thousand feet. The most important crop is maize and wheat, but wheat is grown in the poorer soil. Handicrafts play an important role in the economy of the state of Jammu & Kashmir, shawls, carpets, carved- wood pieces, papier-mache articles and silver ware are among the numerous handicrafts which Kashmir has to offer. They are made by craftsmen in thousands of hamlets spread all over the valley. Embroidery:First and foremost, Kashmir is known for its shawls. They are worked in silk thread with a variety of designs. The prices vary very considerably with the quality of the wool/silk and workmanship. The best embroidered, woolens are represented by ladies long coats, caps, gowns, waistcoats and scarves. There is a wide choice in embroidered silk pieces, such as bed-carves, dinner sets, tray clothes, pillow covers and silk sarees. The designs-vines and leaves, entwined roses and narcissi, poppies and tulips-conspicuous for their vivid colour and meticulous craftsmanship.
The pile carpets of Kashmir show unmistakable Persian and central Asian influence in design and motifs. It is, however, in Namdas-rough felt rugs with wool embroidery-that the talent of the Kashmir craftsmen for imaginative designs and bright colours finds full scope. Woodcarving is a specialty of Kashmir. The walnut tree is plentiful in the valley and it yields timber, which is durable and lends itself to carving and polishing. Woodcarving is therefore an ancient craft. The wide range of carved articles include lump stands, cigar boxes, shave boxes, book ends, trays, dressing tables and drawing room tables. |
